We started the collection (or rather Jonathon did) in 1997.  The first piece he bought was from Hayley Smith at Chelsea followed by a few pieces at David Woodward's Ten Turners exhibition, including a large jarrah bowl made by David himself.

The collection grew from then onwards with pieces added as we found them although in the early days it was quite hard to track down people who were selling work.  David Woodward was a great help and, as we got to know them, so were Ray Key, Phil Irons and many others.

Over the years we have bought work from craft fairs, exhibitions, the turners themselves, Loughborough (great source of a wide variety of work) even Passadena from the AAW symposium a few years ago.

We only buy a piece if we both really like it.  It has to have a Wow! factor for us.  We don't get hung up by "named" turners - it makes no difference to us whether a turner is famous or not, if we like the work and can agree a price then we'll buy it.  It makes more of a difference if the turner is a nice person - we prefer to deal with people we like if at all possible.

We are often asked - why the Daniel Collection.  Simple really, Daniel is Shirley's maiden name and the Cuff Collection simply didn't sound right so Daniel it was.

To date we have about 200 or so pieces and we live with it all around our house.  Our favourites change from day to day and with such a wide range of styles, types of wood etc there are plenty to choose from.

We are delighted to be asked to join the Wizardry in Wood 2008 exhibition and are looking forward to bringing several of our pieces although it will be very difficult to decide which to bring and which to leave behind.
