George stated his career in the furniture manufacturing trade as an apprentice cabinetmaker.

This was interrupted by the Second World War, and after service in the Signal Regiment for six years, in 1946 he joined a firm manufacturing joinery and contract furniture.

In 1954 he was made Director of Works and became Managing Director in 1968. Far from being a purely management position, George continued to get stuck in and sort any holds ups in the factory. Most of the problems were in the finishing department and this was where George developed his vast knowledge in this area of woodworking.

In 1986 George bought a second-hand Wadkin lathe although up until then he had not done too much turning. Coming across the AWGB stand at a woodworking exhibition started him off turning in earnest and he subsequently joined the Middlesex and Surrey Woodturning Clubs where he proceeded to win the turning competitions nearly every month.

Retirement in 1989 gave him time to complete his workshops and an extension to his bungalow in Claygate, Surrey. George spends a good deal of his time now with the aid of his son David who helps with the maths, working out extremely complex patterns and reproducing them on the Evans lathes.
