Joey Richardson, as well as being a professional turner is also a housewife and mother, who first became interested in woodturning as a medium in 1990 and attended classes under Chris Stott RPT for some years, gradually learning her trade and perfecting her techniques.

She is on the Register of the Worshipful Company of Turners, is a member of the Association of Woodturners of Great Britain and the American Association of Woodturners.

In 1998 she entered her first competitive work, 'The Planets' in the international woodturning show at Wembley where she gained the runner-up prize. This spurred her on to more competition work and she gained many honours for her innovative and technically brilliant work - gradually honing her skills until, in 2002, she was accepted on the Register of Professional Turners.

Continuing with her competition work, she won the Gold Medal in the Prestige category at the International Woodworking Show at Alexandra Palace in 2004. In that year she also wrote her first article for ‘The Woodworker' magazine and the excellence of her work and articles have gained her a wide following.

The real turning point for her career was when under the guidance of Stuart Mortimer RPT, she won the 2005 Bursary award of the Worshipful Company of Turners. This provided the funds for necessary equipment and more importantly, money to travel to America to study different techniques.

She chose to study under Trent Bosch and David Nittman after attending the AAW symposium, the biggest woodturning event in the world. But she was also especially inspired by the work of Binh Pho with whom she spent three intensive days.  These opened up to her the artistic possibilities of woodturning as an art form.

He also taught her the thrills of creating from the inner self and has brought new horizons to her work. Joey, with her usual enthusiastic vigour has actively sought to marry her art into her work and since then has gone from strength to strength.
