Stephen is an Ornamental Turner creating intricate and highly tactile objects from hardwoods and other natural materials. He aims to bring out the natural beauty, life and character of each piece of wood used and works to a high standard to produce enduring objects that will help to raise the status of wood as a precious resource.

In 1998 Stephen was awarded the Lady Gertrude Crawford Gold Medal of the Worshipful Company of Turners for a pair of candlesticks in African Blackwood and sterling silver. In the same year his watch stand won the H.E. Twentyman Silver Medal of the Worshipful Company of Turners and his standing bowl in Cocobolo and African Blackwood was awarded a certificate of merit by the Society of Ornamental Turners.

He is the youngest person ever to have won these two premier medals of the Worshipful Company of Turners for works in Ornamental Turning.

In 2003 he was awarded joint first prize of £3,000 in the Bursary Competition of the Worshipful Company of Turners.

He has an honours degree in Chemistry from Imperial College, London and is an Associate of the Royal College of Science and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He studied furniture conservation at the Royal College of Art (Victoria & Albert Museum).
