Dr Tim Lawson RPT
Woodturning for me is a second career and started in 1987 as a result of
three factors:
1. The big storm (hence the trading name)
2. The actions of Kenneth Clarke, the health minister at the time.
3. A lifelong love of wood.
In my youth I used wood for building boats. As a student I found artistic
pleasure in carving figures. But in 1987 I was introduced to the lathe and
endless supplies of wood. I resigned from the NHS in 1992 and have never
looked back.
I acquired my first tree from The National Trust at Box Hill. It was a
massive yew which took five days to cut up with the toy chainsaw I had at
the time. I still harvest nearly all my own wood. The NT connection thrives
and a large part of my production sells through NT outlets.
As a beginner I tried all sorts of turning but came to find that faceplate
work was the best way of expressing my feelings for wood as an art medium.
Chris Stott was my main tutor but I have watched numerous others at work. I
was impressed by Mike(Chai) Scott who I met early on and by the work of a
number of other British and American turners.
I now lean towards work which expresses the character of the medium and
deplore items which hide it. Design and results are to me, overwhelmingly
more important than technique. Vessels, platters and dishes form the bulk of
my production. Necessity requires a turnover of 1000 + items per annum but
by choice I would prefer to put all my energies into one major item. I do
not demonstrate, teach, write books or belong to the celebrity turning
fraternity. I just make and sell my work.
At this exhibition I will present a small number of large vessels each of
which represents firstly the nature and characteristics of the wood and
secondly my choice of shapes that I see as elegant, majestic, strong or
feminine. Each piece will have been made purely for the joy of the making.
