The Register of Professional Turners was established in 1978 by the then Master of the Turners' Company, Felix Levy.

Its original purpose was to act as a channel between discriminating customers and competent makers of turned work. All applicants for registration are subject to a process of assessment. Membership remains the only accreditation for professional hand turners.

The Register is a list of nearly 200 working turners from all parts of the United Kingdom, giving their specialities, which range from architectural and furniture components to individual gallery pieces and Treen (small articles made of wood, especially eating and drinking utensils).

The proper teaching of the craft of turning to hobbyists and those who may become professionals is taken very seriously. The Register has published a code of practice for instructors and has established a scheme of questionnaires for students after the completion of their courses.

The Turners' Company invites all Register members to an annual Craft Meeting in Apothecaries' Hall when ideas and experiences can be exchanges and lectures on woodturning are given by experts in their fields.
